Shared Note	George graduated from the University of Buffalo in Pharmacy in 1907. He was living in Central Square, N.Y. in 1953. From a letter written April 6, 1953, George provides the following: I myself have been a church organist for 50 years, ever since I was 12. Have been town clerk of this town ‏(Central Square)‏ for 20 years. Have operated a store for over 40 years. This store was originally operated by my wife's father and uncle. I took over when her father was injured in a railroad accident and the uncle died. She had two brothers, both lawyers; one is dead and the other was a county judge, bank president, and currently is an active member of the N.Y. State Assembly at Albany.
Note	The following is from George's obituary. He died Dec. 27, 1984 at age 100. George Devitt, 100, of Central Square died Thursday, Dec. 27 at an Oswego nursing home after a brief illness. Mr. Devitt was a life resident of Central Square. He had served as the town clerk for Central Square from 1934 to 1959. Mr. Devitt retired at the age of 81 as the owner and operator for many years of a general store in Central Square. He was the organist at Traub Funeral Home and the United Methodist Church until July. Mr. Devitt was a 1907 graduate of the University of Buffalo and was the oldest living alumni. Mr. Devitt was a member of the United Methodist Church of Central Square and the Central Square Senior Citizens. On his 100th birthday, July 10, Mr. Devitt received copies of a resolution of congratulations passed by the State Legislature and Assembly which cited Mr. Devitt as an "exceptional centenarian" with a zest for life which "inspired and enriched the lives of his family and friends." Surviving are a daughter, Faith Crawford of Delevan; two grandchildren, Eleanor Hopkins and Carl Crawford, and three great-grandchildren. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Traub Funeral Home, Central Square. Spring burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Central Square. Note: Central Square Fire Department member
