Gordon grew up on the homestead at Cassidy Lake and was educated as a teacher and carpenter. He started his working career as an electrical teacher in Minto and Chipman, New Brunswick, and later he became school Vice Principal. Both he a nd his wife Mildred enjoyed long years as teachers, including active roles in Teachers Associations even after retirement. They were enthusiastic United Church of Canada supporters.

Gordon is buried at the Fairhaven cemetery on Salsbury Road.
